Bryan Steil, U.S. Congressman representing Wisconsin’s 1st district since 2019 and the successor to Paul Ryan, posted a series of tweets in early May 2026 addressing issues related to election integrity and government spending.
On May 3, Steil outlined his support for specific election policies by stating: ” Voter ID Clean Voter Rolls Ban Ballot Harvesting Commonsense election integrity can improve voter confidence and boost turnout.”
The following day, Steil turned his attention to federal spending, writing: ” $153 billion in overpayments in one year RIDICULOUS  – this waste is: – Almost the entire DHS budget in 2025 – More than DOL, DOI, and EPA spending COMBINED – OVER A THIRD of what we spend on the VA This estimate DOESN’T EVEN COVER every agency!” (May 4).
In another tweet posted on May 4, Steil highlighted issues with a COVID-era relief program: “One SBA COVID-era program, the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, was responsible for $10.1 billion in overpayments at a 68.9% RATE. That means most payments were in the wrong amount or shouldn’t have been made at all.”
Steil has consistently focused on government accountability and fiscal responsibility during his tenure. He has served as Wisconsin’s representative since replacing Paul Ryan in 2019 and has won several consecutive elections—defeating Peter Barca in 2024 with 54% of the vote, Ann Roe in 2022 with just over half of the votes cast, Roger Polack in 2020 by nearly a twenty-point margin, and Randy Bryce in his initial run in 2018.
