The City of Janesville Recreation Division will offer an American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding Camp beginning July 10.
This camp is for youth ages 11 to 14 who are competent swimmers looking to improve their skills and bridge the gap between swim lessons and lifeguarding certification.
Junior guards will be introduced to lifesaving skills such as in-water rescues, use of a rescue tube, first-aid, CPR, and AED. Participants will also shadow certified lifeguards in rotation to understand the job better.
Pre-requisites for participating in the camp include the ability to:
- Swim front crawl for 25 yards demonstrating rhythmic breathing.
- Swim breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breath, kick, glide sequence.
- Tread water for one minute without arms.
- Perform a back float for 30 seconds or swim 25 yards of elementary backstroke or back crawl.
- Swim 10 feet underwater.
Online registration for the camp is available on the Active Communities webpage or by visiting the Recreation Division (18 N. Jackson St.). The deadline to register is June 26. The class must have a minimum of six participants to be held.
