On Friday, August 4, 2023, Battalion Chief Chris Lukas will retire after over 22 years of service to the Janesville Fire Department (JFD) and the City of Janesville.

Born and raised in nearby Milton, WI, Battalion Chief Lukas' interest in public service was sparked as a young man by his father, Spencer, a Milton police officer and member of the community's volunteer fire service. He took quickly to helping others and joined the Milton Fire Department as a part-time firefighter in 1988. Battalion Chief Lukas holds an associate degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University.

Battalion Chief Lukas has served as a member of the JFD since his hire as a Firefighter/EMT in April 2001. He held a variety of positions and assignments during his career with the JFD, including Driver/Operator and Fire Lieutenant, as well as serving on the department's Dive Team, Tech Rescue Team, and Hazmat Team. In 2016, he was appointed to Battalion Chief.

Speaking about his tenured career, Battalion Chief Lukas appreciated his "second family" at the JFD. He noted that department members often spend more time together than with their families at home. "I enjoyed solving problems for community members, often having one of their worst days, and making it better for them and their families," he shared. Battalion Chief Lukas added that even when navigating difficult situations, he and his peers could rely on each other and their shared experiences.

"When I think of Mr. Lukas, I think of his deep roots in the fire service," said Fire Chief Jim Ponkauskas. "He is extremely knowledgeable and always willing to pass that knowledge along." Fire Chief Ponkauskas added that the mentorship provided by Battalion Chief Lukas has assisted in training numerous great officers, allowed the department to excel at fireground operations, and helped make the "JFD what it is today."

Battalion Chief Lukas plans to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation in retirement. Chris and his wife, Jenny, share four children, and he noted that working in the fire service is often also a commitment for the families of those who serve. He now looks forward to spending more time with his family. An outdoorsman, Battalion Chief Lukas will also take the chance to take more visits to his cabin. He plans to continue to give back to the profession, advising neighboring Lakeside Fire-Rescue on training exercises.

"We are all happy to see that he has said such a successful career," added Fire Chief Ponkauskas, "and thankful he can enjoy a happy and healthy retirement."

"It was a great experience, and I enjoyed it a lot," said Battalion Chief Lukas when asked for parting words. He added that he is excited for the City and the JFD moving forward, noting that the community is in a great place.

The City would like to thank Battalion Chief Chris Lukas for his more than 22 years of dedicated service to his community, the Janesville Fire Department, and the City of Janesville.
