Washington, D.C. - Congressman Bryan Steil's legislation, the End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act (H.R. 6632), has been signed into law, aimed at disrupting the financing of terrorism by Hamas. The law requires cooperation with U.S. allies in the Group of Seven (G7) to prevent Hamas from funding armed hostilities against Israel.
In response to the signing of the legislation, Congressman Steil emphasized the importance of enforcing sanctions during times of conflict, stating, "During a time of war, terrorism, and instability in the Middle East, it is important to ensure sanctions are not only on the books but enforced to their fullest extent." Additionally, he highlighted the significance of the law in cutting off Hamas's revenue for violent attacks in the region, saying, "This law ensures we are using every tool in our toolbox to deny Hamas revenue to fund violent attacks targeting Israel, Jews, and American personnel throughout the Middle East."
The End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act also mandates that the Treasury Department provide Congress with an analysis of major financing sources for Hamas, details of U.S. efforts to disrupt illicit financial flows to the group, and an evaluation of strategies to undermine Hamas's ability to finance armed hostilities against Israel.
This legislation follows a previous enactment that makes it more challenging for state sponsors of terrorism, such as Iran, to utilize International Monetary Fund (IMF) resources to finance terrorist organizations like Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.
Notably, this marks the second bill of Congressman Steil's to be signed into law during this congressional session.
