WASHINGTON (April 20, 2024) - Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) celebrated the passing of his legislation, the End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act (H.R. 6632), in the House of Representatives. The bill aims to disrupt Hamas's ability to finance terrorism and violence by collaborating with U.S. allies in the Group of Seven (G7).
As Steil expressed, "During a time of war, terrorism, and instability in the Middle East, it is important to ensure sanctions are not only on the books, but enforced to their fullest extent." He emphasized the significance of utilizing all available tools to prevent Hamas from generating revenue for violent attacks targeting Israel, Jews, and American personnel in the region.
The legislation also mandates the Treasury Department to present Congress with an analysis of major financing sources for Hamas, details of U.S. multilateral initiatives to disrupt illicit financial flows to the group, and an assessment of efforts to undermine Hamas's capacity to finance armed hostilities against Israel.
Moreover, a portion of the End Financing for Hamas and State Sponsors of Terrorism Act had been recently enacted into law, making it more challenging for state sponsors of terrorism, such as Iran, to misuse International Monetary Fund (IMF) resources to support terrorist organizations like Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah.
The comprehensive approach outlined in the bill reflects Congressman Steil's commitment to combatting terrorism and ensuring that financial avenues for violent activities are obstructed effectively.
