The City of Janesville has celebrated its fifth anniversary as a Green Tier Legacy Community, a recognition granted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This program acknowledges the city's dedication to minimizing environmental impacts, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
Deputy Secretary Steven Little from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources praised Janesville's efforts, stating, “Janesville’s leadership and commitment to superior environmental performance, combined with (the) team’s hard work and dedication, have delivered important environmental achievements.” He further added that “The City of Janesville, its leadership, employees, residents, collaborators and stakeholders should be proud of these accomplishments.”
In 2019, Janesville became the first member from Rock County to join the Green Tier Legacy Community program. As part of this initiative, the city participates in quarterly meetings, collaborates with other communities, disseminates information to the public and prepares an annual report outlining city goals, baselines and sustainability plans.
City Manager Kevin Lahner emphasized the importance of this membership: "With the support of the City Council, the City of Janesville joined the Green Tier program to demonstrate our commitment to setting and achieving goals related to environmental sustainability." He also highlighted how "Green Tier allows us to measure our progress on goals, as well as learn from other member communities how we can further our efforts to be good stewards of our vital and finite environmental resources.”
