Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) along with Representatives Josh Harder (CA-09), Daniel Meuser (PA-09), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), and Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) introduced a bipartisan resolution this week to designate May 9th as National Scam Survivor Day. The representatives emphasized the significant impact of scams on American citizens, with an estimated loss of over $10 billion in 2023.
Steil stated, “Scam survivors should not be defined by the scams they endured, but by their bravery coming forward. By recognizing the survivors, we can continue to work to prevent future scams.”
The resolution for National Scam Survivor Day encourages victims of scams to share their experiences. This is aimed at reducing stigma and encouraging individuals to seek necessary guidance and assistance. The legislation also promotes a collaborative approach involving government bodies, private sector entities, and nonprofit organizations in supporting scam survivors and preventing future scams.
Harder noted that criminals are increasingly utilizing advanced AI technology and other high-tech tools, causing financial losses for families. He said, “Seniors have lost their entire life savings, and parents have lost thousands in savings trying to save their kids from emergencies made up by scammers. It’s heartbreaking and we should be talking about it so people can protect themselves from these ruthless scammers."
Meuser echoed these sentiments, highlighting that everyone is vulnerable to these sophisticated scams. Gottheimer expressed his support for the resolution stating that those who have fallen victim to scams should know they are not alone.
The International Better Business Bureau has endorsed this resolution.
Rep. Steil will host a free scam prevention event for residents in Wisconsin's First Congressional District on May 20, 2024.
