The City of Janesville Recreation Division is currently monitoring water quality at Lions Beach, located at 1401 Palmer Dr., due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. Weekly water samples are collected and tested by the State Hygiene Lab in Madison.

Recent testing conducted during the week of June 10 revealed bacteria levels of 727 CFU/100 mL in the swimming area. According to water quality standards, a result between 0 and 250 CFU is considered safe for swimming. Results between 250 and 1,000 CFU require public notice but do not necessitate beach closure. Levels above 1,000 CFU would mandate the closure of the swimming area pending further testing.

As a result of these findings, the Recreation Division has posted a water quality advisory notice at Lions Beach. The advisory will remain in effect until subsequent tests show bacteria levels below the established criteria.

Bacteria counts can fluctuate throughout the season based on usage and environmental factors such as rainfall. The City will remove advisory signs once a one-day sample result falls within safe limits.

For more information or questions, contact the Recreation Division at (608) 755-3030.
