The Janesville Police Department has issued a series of reminders to ensure safe biking practices during the summer months. With increased bicycle activity due to warmer weather and longer days, the department emphasizes several key safety tips for cyclists.

The police department advises always wearing a properly fitted bike helmet, noting that "75% of all bicycle fatalities involve injury to the head." Cyclists are also reminded to obey traffic laws, use signals and signs when turning, and ride with traffic on the right side of the street.

Visibility is another crucial aspect of biking safety. The department recommends wearing bright clothing during daytime rides and using a white front light and red rear reflector at night, as required by law. Additionally, cyclists should ride defensively by scanning traffic at all times and being aware of other vehicles when approaching intersections and making turns. They are urged to avoid alcohol or drugs before riding.

Planning routes that include roads with less traffic and slower speeds can enhance safety. The safest paths may be bike lanes or bike paths away from heavy traffic.

Motorists are also encouraged to be vigilant for bicyclists, giving them ample room and watching for their signals. The police department advises against honking car horns at cyclists, as this sudden noise can startle them. Sharing the road responsibly with bicyclists is essential for ensuring everyone's safety.

By adhering to these guidelines, both cyclists and motorists can contribute to a safe biking season in Janesville. Additional information about local bike trails is available on the City's website.
