The City of Janesville Recreation Division conducts weekly water quality tests at Lions Beach, located at 1401 Palmer Drive. These samples are analyzed by the State Hygiene Lab in Madison to monitor for E. coli bacteria. The most recent test conducted during the week of June 17 revealed elevated bacteria levels of 1,046 CFU/100 mL in the swimming area. Consequently, the Recreation Division has closed the beach until further testing shows lower bacteria levels.

Water quality standards indicate that a result between 0 and 250 CFU/100 mL is safe for swimming. Results between 250 and 1,000 CFU/100 mL are also considered safe but require public notice. Any results exceeding 1,000 CFU necessitate closing the swimming area pending further testing. Bacteria counts at Lions Beach fluctuate throughout the season due to various factors such as usage and environmental conditions like rainfall.

The City will remove closure signs once two consecutive tests show results below the established safety criteria.

For inquiries, contact the Recreation Division at (608) 755-3030.
