WASHINGTON (July 10, 2024) - Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) released a statement following the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 8281).
"American elections are for American citizens only," said Steil. "As Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, I have worked to improve election integrity and increase confidence in our elections. By passing the SAVE Act, we are one step closer to preventing noncitizen voting and protecting American elections.”
The House passed the SAVE Act today by a vote of 221 - 198. On May 16, Steil led a Committee on House Administration hearing with several top election integrity witnesses to discuss the SAVE Act and noncitizen voting in U.S. elections. On May 23, the Committee on House Administration passed the SAVE Act by a vote of 6-1 out of committee.
The SAVE Act aims to:
- Prevent noncitizens from voting by updating the National Voter Registration Act to require states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering an individual to vote.
- Strengthen election administration and restore Americans' confidence in elections.
- Allow states to access federal databases containing citizenship information to help perform voter list maintenance and remove noncitizens from voter rolls.
