Congressman Bryan Steil, along with Senators Roger Wicker and John Cornyn, has called on U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to focus on peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This request coincides with Azerbaijan's selection as the host for the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29).
The letter from these lawmakers highlights ongoing efforts by Azerbaijan and Armenia to resolve long-standing conflicts dating back to the Soviet Union's collapse. The letter acknowledges progress made in areas such as border delimitation and high-level engagements but notes that discussions have recently stalled.
The lawmakers emphasize that hosting COP29 presents an opportunity for Azerbaijan to demonstrate its commitment to international cooperation by advancing peace with Armenia. They stress the importance of U.S. involvement in maintaining stability in this region amid global conflicts.
"Since late last year, Azerbaijan and Armenia have engaged in negotiations to bring an end to decades of hostilities stemming from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Both sides have taken commendable steps toward peace, including border delimitation and ongoing engagement at the highest levels. Unfortunately, discussions appear to have stalled," they stated.
"By hosting COP29, Azerbaijan intends to show that it is a responsible member of the global community. Hosting an international forum may be seen as a good gesture of diplomacy, but Azerbaijan has the opportunity to do more. If Azerbaijan truly wishes to advance international cooperation, it should demonstrate that by making peace with Armenia."
"At a time of increasing global conflict, it is crucial that the U.S. work urgently to consolidate and build on the fragile stability in this critical region."
