On February 26, 2025, the Janesville Police Department carried out alcohol compliance checks at eight local businesses. These checks aim to ensure that establishments verify identification and do not sell alcohol to underage individuals.

The procedure involves an individual aged between 18 and 20 attempting to purchase alcohol. If a sale occurs, the clerk is cited for selling alcohol to a minor. The incident is also reported to the City of Janesville Alcohol Licensing Committee for further review.

During these checks, four businesses were found selling alcohol to underage buyers: Smokes and Spirits at 2502 Center Ave., Romans at 108 Center Ave., Kwik Trip South at 3123 USH 51, and Badger Spirits at 1507 Center Ave.

The businesses that complied with the regulations and did not sell alcohol to minors include Woodmans at 2819 N. Lexington Dr., Hy-Vee at 2500 Humes Rd., Festival Foods at 2233 Humes Rd., and J-Town Spirits at 1917 Center Ave.

Sgt. Dammen from the Janesville Police Department conducted these compliance checks. It is important to note that according to Wisconsin Supreme Court Rule 20:3:6 on Trial Publicity, a charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
