KENTUCKY STATE: ‘We’ll start back in again’: Developer plans to rebuild after downtown St. Paul fire

Zz

Kentucky State issued the following announcement on August 4.

A hotel under construction in a major development project in downtown St. Paul went up in flames early Tuesday morning — the blaze was so large that it caused the building to mostly collapse and left debris scattered miles away.

No injuries were reported. The new hotel that’s been planned across from Xcel Energy Center will have to be built anew.

“Obviously, it’s a devastating morning,” said Carl Kaeding, president of the Bloomington-based Kaeding Development Group, on Tuesday. “Prior to even putting a shovel in the ground, we had years into this project. The light was at the end of the tunnel. … But we’ll dust ourselves off and as soon as we’re able to get back in it, we’ll start back in again.”

The $68 million Seven Corners Gateway development project includes a hotel and apartments at the long-underused Seven Corners/Cleveland Circle parking lot.

Construction of the five-story, 120-unit Courtyard by Marriott Hotel at Kellogg Boulevard and West Seventh Street began last fall and the hotel was going to open in March 2021, according to Kaeding.

The apartment building under construction did not have visible damage. Firefighters sprayed it with water to help ensure the hotel fire didn’t spread to it, said Deputy Fire Chief Roy Mokosso.
