This fall, the City of Janesville will collect loose leaves November 6–17. A map showing the day on which leaf collection crews expect to be in your neighborhood is available on the City's website. The dates listed are the earliest collection crews will be in your area; however, delays may occur.

If collection crews are in your area on your trash collection day, please keep carts on the terrace or near the curb line in your driveway. Allow enough room for leaf collection crews to maneuver. Cars should remain off the street on the day of pick-up, as staff will not be able to gather leaves with vehicles in the way. Crews will only be on each street once during collection.

Please place leaves on the terrace and not in the street until a few days before your collection day. Move the leaves into the street one to two days before your scheduled collection day. Please ensure that the leaves are raked away from the gutter to keep leaves from moving back to the terrace as crews come by. Avoid placing leaves near or over storm sewer intakes to prevent street flooding. Please note that citizens may not rake leaves into the street gutter before October 1 or after crews have passed the street. Street sweepers will follow a day or two behind the leaf collection crews to clean up small amounts of debris left on the streets.

The City will once again be utilizing three specialized leaf vacuum trucks. This equipment will collect leaves before and during the regular loose leaf collection dates. This specialized equipment will work in addition to the standard fleet of collection vehicles and may pick up your leaves earlier than your scheduled day. City crews will be back on your normally scheduled day for loose leaf collection if this occurs. It is extremely important that only loose leaves are placed at the curb, as sticks and other debris can damage the vacuum system.

The City will collect bagged yard waste and bundled brush on the same day as your regular garbage pickup the week of November 27–December 1. Grass, leaves, and garden debris will be collected in paper biodegradable bags or reusable containers up to 35 gallons in size. Starting this fall of 2023, the City will no longer be accepting yard waste in plastic bags. Bags or containers must each weigh less than 50 pounds. Brush should be in bundles that are no larger than 4 feet in length, no more than 12 inches in diameter, and no heavier than 50 pounds. Size limits are necessary so bundles can fit into collection trucks. Please place the bags and/or bundles at the curb, a few feet from your trash cart, by 7:00 a.m. on the morning of your scheduled collection day.

Other Yard Waste Disposal Options:

  • Use as mulch or leave grass clipping on your lawn.
  • Home compost or deposit at the City compost site (Janesville residents only).
  • Deliver stumps, brush, branches, roots, and shrubs to the Demolition Landfill for a fee of $5.50/cubic yard (Janesville residents) or $7.00/cubic yard (non-residents).
