Winter in Wisconsin's Park Place is a great time for outdoor activities. Still, the cold and snow can also pose serious hazards to health and safety. Knowing the importance of understanding the risks of winter weather, the City of Janesville is joining communities across the state by recognizing Winter Weather Awareness Week. Governor Tony Evers has declared this special designation from November 13 to 17 to help highlight how residents can plan and stay safe during the colder months.

Staying informed about weather conditions is critical to being prepared for winter. Checking forecasts from the National Weather Service and other trusted local sources will help you dress appropriately for the temperature and take proper precautions when driving in icy or snowy conditions.

If heavy snow or ice is expected, prepare by stocking up on additional supplies, ensure you have an emergency kit at home and in your vehicle, and plan what to do if you lose power at home.

Some helpful tips include keeping an emergency kit in your car, avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather, and checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need extra assistance. By staying aware and prepared, you can help keep yourself and your community safe during winter.

Winter emergency kits should include food, water, a flashlight, batteries, and blankets. In your vehicle, include a snow shovel, extra gloves and hats, a cell phone charger, and cat litter or sand to help give your wheels traction on icy roads if your vehicle gets stuck.
