The City of Janesville has recently sent out the 2023 Real Estate Property Tax Bills to property owners in accordance with State Statute. Residents can expect to receive their bills this week. However, if they wish to view their tax bill sooner, they have the option to download it from the City's website.

According to the City, over 26,000 tax bills are issued every year on behalf of various taxing jurisdictions, including the City of Janesville, Rock County, the School District of Janesville and Milton School District, and Blackhawk Technical College.

When it comes to making payments, property owners are required to pay their tax bills to the Rock County Treasurer. The County Treasurer's office collects real estate taxes for the City of Janesville. Payments can be made through check, money order, or cashier's/official check. It is important to make the payment payable to the Rock County Treasurer and include the Tax ID Number in the memo of the check. The City advises against sending cash through the mail.

To provide further assistance, the City reminds residents that the Rock County Treasurer's office will be closed on December 25, 26, and January 1. It is crucial to note that the first installment payments are due by January 31, 2024, while the balance is due by July 31, 2024. For those who prefer alternative payment methods, credit card payments and e-checks are available options. Residents can make use of these options by calling 1 (855) 912-ROCK or visiting the City's website.

In addition to the regular tax payments, homeowners have the opportunity to claim a lottery tax credit on the first installment of their property tax bill. This credit is made possible through the revenues generated from the state lottery, pari-mutuel on-track betting, and bingo. To be eligible for the lottery tax credit in 2023, homeowners must have owned and resided in their homes on January 1, 2023. It is important to note that vacation homes, rental homes, businesses, and bare land do not qualify for this credit. Homeowners who purchased their homes after January 1, 2023, may still be eligible for the credit under certain circumstances. More information and forms can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue's website.

Furthermore, homeowners should be aware that each real property with improvements is eligible for the First Dollar Credit, as mandated by state law. The First Dollar Credit will be reflected on the tax bills, and no action is needed from citizens to receive this credit. The credit will be split between the two installment payments for residents who choose to pay their tax bills in two installments.

For any questions or concerns, residents can reach out to the City Clerk-Treasurer's Office at (608) 755-3070 or the Rock County Treasurer's Office at (608) 757-5670.

With property tax bills being sent out, residents of Janesville are reminded of the various payment options available and the eligibility criteria for tax credits. It is essential for property owners to make timely payments and take advantage of any applicable credits to ensure compliance with tax regulations. For more information and access to necessary forms, residents can visit the City's website or contact the respective offices mentioned above.
