Beloit, WI (May 20, 2024) - Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) today hosted his fifth Free Scam Prevention Event for residents in Wisconsin’s First Congressional District in Beloit.

“Scammers are always looking for new ways to obtain information. Roughly 46,000 Wisconsinites reported having been personally victimized by scams in 2023,” said Steil. “Every year, I host a scam-prevention event to share resources that are available to prevent the vulnerable from being scammed. Until we are successful at ending scams, I will continue to provide resources to help protect people’s personal information.”

During the event, officials from the Federal Trade Commission, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Wisconsin Better Business Bureau, and AARP shared information regarding new scams targeting Americans’ information and resources to prevent and report scams. Local residents also had the opportunity to speak directly with Steil and other officials to address their questions and concerns.

Earlier this month, Rep. Steil introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate May 9th as National Scam Survivor Day. The resolution encourages scam survivors to tell their stories to combat the stigma that may prevent individuals from seeking the guidance and assistance they deserve. Additionally, the legislation urges a collaborative approach to support scam survivors and prevent future scams among government, the private sector, and nonprofit organizations.
