Last week, Congressman Bryan Steil of Wisconsin's First Congressional District awarded Sergeant Patrick "Pat" Riley the 2024 Veteran of the Year Award. Sgt. Riley, a Janesville resident, served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and continues to be involved with several veterans' organizations.

Sgt. Riley is an active member of the Vietnam Vets of America, Marine Corps League, and Janesville VFW. He volunteers at various ceremonies on Memorial Day, POW/MIA Day, and Veterans Day in and around Janesville. These events are held at locations such as Oak Hill Cemetery, Traxler Park, and the Doughboy Statue downtown.

Congressman Steil expressed his admiration for Sgt. Riley's service by stating: “Those men and women who have worn the uniform and served our country have paid a burden that many of us who have not served struggle to fully appreciate. Sergeant Riley’s fidelity to his country and community truly exemplifies what it means to serve. It is my honor to present him with the Veteran of the Year Award.”

The selection process for this award involved nominations from Wisconsin residents reviewed by Wisconsin’s First Congressional District’s Veterans Advisory Board. The criteria included demonstrating a commitment to community service through advocacy or other actions, exemplifying excellence, and showing dedication to supporting fellow veterans.

Nominees were required to be veterans of one of the five Armed Forces branches or associated reserves or National Guard units, including United States Merchant Marines. They also needed to provide a DD-214 form and reside within Wisconsin's First Congressional District.
