Congressman Bryan Steil has introduced the No Sanctions Relief for Terrorists Act, aiming to maintain sanctions on Iran unless the country halts funding terrorist activities. The bill forms part of the Republican Study Committee’s Enforcing Maximum Pressure Initiative.
"The Iranian regime is the largest State Sponsor of Terrorism in the world and has continued to finance terrorist proxies for more than four decades. Iran’s actions have endangered U.S. citizens, companies, and allies around the world,” Steil stated. He emphasized, “No administration should repeat the errors of the Biden Administration. We must ban sanctions waivers that can enable the Iranian regime to finance attacks on America and our allies."
In 2023, the Biden Administration allowed Iran access to up to $10 billion in previously restricted funds via a sanctions waiver. This occurred amidst concerns over Iran’s funding and arming of Hamas, notably involving weapons used in an October 7th terrorist attack against Israel.
Steil has previously challenged the Biden Administration on its decision to offer relief to Iran, known as a major sponsor of terrorism. The new legislative proposal seeks to prohibit any presidential administration from granting sanctions relief to Iranian entities and individuals linked to terrorism unless certified by the President to Congress that Iran has ceased sponsoring terrorism.
The bill specifically targets the misuse of humanitarian waivers and licenses that the Biden Administration implemented to bypass terrorism-related sanctions. This legislation follows earlier restoration of sanctions on Iran by the Trump Administration.###
