Bryan Steil, U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, posted a series of statements on social media criticizing both the leadership of SEC Chair Gary Gensler and recent actions by Senate Democrats regarding government funding.
On September 30, 2025, Steil wrote, "During his time as SEC Chair, Gensler waged war on American innovation and stifled our capital markets. I’m calling for answers." Later that day, he commented on legislative activity in Congress: "The House passed a clean CR. There is no good reason to shut the government down. Senate Dems are being reckless. Totally unproductive."
Continuing his criticism into the evening of October 1, Steil stated: "Senate Democrats just shut down the government. All to placate their radical base. This is as bad of an idea as Government Run Grocery Stores!"
Steil has served as a congressman since winning his first election in 2018 against Randy Bryce with 54.6% of the vote. He was re-elected in subsequent elections, defeating Roger Polack in 2020 with 59.3%, Ann Roe in 2022 with 54.1%, and Peter Barca in 2024 with 54%. His recent posts reflect ongoing partisan disagreements over federal spending measures and oversight of financial regulators.
