The City of Janesville has announced a winter weather emergency that will take effect from 1 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. This declaration requires all parked vehicles to be removed from city streets until snow and ice control operations are complete. Failure to comply may result in parking tickets being issued.
According to the forecast, the city is expecting snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches starting overnight on Monday and continuing through early Wednesday morning. To ensure the efficiency and safety of snow and ice removal operations, all parked vehicles must be relocated from city streets. City crews will focus on maintaining main and arterial streets during the snowfall, with plowing of other streets taking place once the snow has stopped.
To facilitate the parking of vehicles during this winter weather emergency, residents are encouraged to utilize their garages or driveways. However, if these options are not available, parking is permitted in any municipal parking lot during the duration of the emergency. Several municipal parking lots are available downtown, including the East Wall Street Lot, City Hall Lot, S High Street Lot, Hedberg Public Library Lot, River/Union Street Lot, and N Parker Drive Parking Ramp. It is important to note that vehicles must be removed from these lots once the emergency has ended to allow for snow and ice removal.
Those who fail to comply with the winter weather emergency parking regulations may face fines of $50. The Police Department has the authority to issue tickets to violators even before snow and ice control operations begin.
Residents of Janesville can find additional information regarding the winter weather emergency on the City's Snow & Ice Control webpage or by contacting the Snow Hotline at (608) 755-SNOW. Any problems or concerns can be reported to the City Services Center at (608) 755-3110.
In light of the upcoming winter storm, Mayor John Doe emphasized the importance of compliance with the parking regulations, stating, "It is crucial that all residents cooperate and move their vehicles off the streets to allow for effective snow and ice removal operations. This will help ensure the safety of our community during this winter weather emergency."
With the winter weather emergency in effect, the City of Janesville is taking proactive measures to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of its residents. By adhering to the parking regulations and utilizing the available parking lots, residents can contribute to the successful management of the upcoming snowstorm.
