On Thursday, February 8, Dennis L. Schultz will retire as an Equipment Operator II after over 27 years of service to the City of Janesville. Schultz, born and raised in Janesville, has been an integral part of the city's operations division since June 1996. He started as a Laborer II and eventually moved on to become an Equipment Operator, contributing significantly to the maintenance of the city's parks.
"I considered being a public servant pretty rewarding," Schultz commented. "Meeting different citizens and completing different tasks." Over the years, he has held various positions within the city, including Grounds Maintenance III in the Parks Division. Schultz's dedication to his work and the community has not gone unnoticed.
"Just mowing the parks, residents would tell you how grateful and appreciative they were," Schultz recalled. "They would just thank us for keeping the parks clean and cared for; it was pretty rewarding." Parks Director Cullen Slapak praised Schultz for his positive attitude and commitment to serving the community. "He always came positively, wanting to truly do good for the community," Director Slapak remarked. "He was also incredibly skilled and efficient at doing this."
Throughout his career, Schultz received recognition for his outstanding work, including the Department of Public Works' Above and Beyond Award in 2016. When asked about his secret to a successful and fulfilling career, Schultz emphasized the importance of making work fun and maintaining a positive outlook.
As he enters retirement, Schultz looks forward to spending more time with his family, including his wife Janet and their two children, David and Arianne. He is also excited to take on his new role as a grandfather to his two grandchildren. Schultz plans to stay active by traveling across the United States, working on projects around the house, and indulging in his favorite hobby of fishing. His beloved pet dachshund, Gigi, will also keep him busy with regular walks and playtime.
Reflecting on his job, Schultz expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to interact with various community members and work with different crews in the Public Works department. "I helped add storm sewers and new streets, do building teardowns, sweep streets, and maintain our parks," he said. In parting, Schultz thanked the community once again, leaving them with the advice, "Just remember, no matter where you go in life, there you are."
The City of Janesville extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dennis Schultz for his more than 27 years of dedicated service to the community and the city. Schultz's contributions have played a significant role in maintaining the city's parks and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
