Beloit College issued the following announcement on Dec. 11
The Beloit College women's basketball team was edged by Cornell 64-59 in Flood Arena Saturday.
The Buccaneers struggled offensively shooting just 23-percent from the floor in the first quarter but the defense kept them close with the score 15-11 after 10 minutes of action.
A 7-2 run for Beloit to open the second had the Bucs claim the advantage 18-17 with just under seven minutes to go before intermission. The rest of the period went back-and-forth with the Rams holding a one-point advantage in the quarter to take a 27-22 lead into the break.
The Rams countered with their own 7-2 run to open the third and take a double digit lead with eight to play in the quarter. The Bucs whittled away at the gap pulling to within three, 37-34, with 4:18 on the clock but Cornell hit two consecutive three's to push the lead back to nine with under three to go in the quarter. Christy Melton dropped in the last bucket of the quarter to make it a seven point contest, 43-36, heading into the final period of play.
A few runs for the Rams had Beloit trailing by as much as 13 with under two to play but the Bucs didn't fold. Beloit ended the quarter on a 6-1 run but ran out of time to complete the comeback.
The Bucs took advantage of Ram miscues with a 22-8 sway in points off turnovers but Cornell was more efficient from long range with four more triples than Beloit.
Addyson Ciochon notched a career-high 19 bolstered by 5-6 from the charity stripe to lead all players in the scoring column. Elizabeth Kalk added 16 points and dished out four assists. Melton hauled in a team-high nine boards.
