The Janesville Transit System (JTS) is pleased to announce the availability of its electronic farebox system, MyJTS. Riders may download the MyJTS app to use their smartphone to purchase and redeem transit fares or obtain a free MyJTS smart card to hold their account information. Either option provides riders the ability to load funds and purchase rides or passes online through a computer, laptop, tablet, or cell phone and quickly redeem fares upon boarding the bus.

Riders transitioning to electronic fares may also take advantage of fare capping. Fare capping means that once a rider pays enough fares to cover a 30-day pass, they do not need to pay any additional fares for the remainder of the 30-day window. A 30-day pass for JTS is $52, which is the maximum amount a rider will spend on fares within any 30-day window. Each time a rider uses the MyJTS smartphone app or MyJTS smart card, MyJTS looks back at previous rides within the last 30 days and determines if the fare cap has been reached. Once the cap has been reached, the rider will not be charged for that day’s rides. Implementing fare capping policies in conjunction with installing a technology-based fare collection system is growing in popularity nationwide, as fare capping advances community equity and offers upward mobility for riders with limited income.

“Implementing MyJTS is very exciting because this program offers riders many new conveniences and amenities while also improving onboard efficiency and safety,” said Transit Director Rebecca Smith. “I encourage all JTS riders to register for MyJTS, and rest assured JTS staff is available to assist as everyone adjusts to the new fare collection system.”

JTS would like to thank the pilot users who assisted in our transition to electronic fares for their willingness to test the MyJTS system as JTS prepared to launch, including riders from the GIFTS Shelter, members of the Rock County Federation of the Blind; employees of the Janesville Industries for the Blind; and CHOICE program students.

Details about MyJTS, including FAQs, links, and directions, may be found on the JTS website. For questions, contact JTS at (608) 755-3150.
