City of Janesville Announces Finalists for Chief of Police

On Thursday, October 18, 2023, the Police and Fire Commission announced the selection of three candidates as finalists for the position of Janesville Chief of Police. 

In alphabetical order, the candidates are Alan Fear, Director of Campus Safety at Cornell College; Patrick Hoey, former Chief of Police for the Village of Carpentersville, Illinois; and Chad Pearson, Acting Chief of Police for the City of Janesville.

Mr. Fear serves as the Director of Public Safety for Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, a position he has held since July 2023. His previous experience includes 21 years as a member of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Police Department, where he attained the rank of Patrol Division Commander. Mr. Fear holds a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership from Fort Hays State University and an associate degree in criminal justice from Kirkwood Community College. He is a graduate of the 
Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. 

Mr. Hoey served as Chief of Police for the Village of Carpentersville, Illinois, from 2021 to 2023. His professional background includes serving as the Chief of Police in South Beloit, Illinois, and Assistant Deputy Chief of Police in Rockford, Illinois. Mr. Hoey graduated from Western Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in law enforcement administration and holds an associate degree from Rock Valley College. He also holds certificates from the University of Virginia and Northern Illinois University. 

Mr. Pearson is currently the Acting Chief Police of the Janesville Police Department and has been its Deputy Chief of Operations since 2022. He joined the agency in 1997 and has served as a Sergeant and Lieutenant. Mr. Pearson has a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is a graduate of the FBI National Law Enforcement Academy and the UW-Madison Command College. 

The three finalists will now engage in a series of interviews and recruitment tests. This process will include an opportunity to meet with the community. Details about the meeting will be announced in the near future.
