It's once again the holiday season, which means lots of delicious, celebratory meals ahead for the residents of the City of Janesville.
However, food around the holidays is often heavy in fats, oils, and grease (F.O.G.), which can come from meats, butter, dressings, sauces, and cooking oils. The Janesville Water Utility reminds utility customers that when these substances go down residential drains, they can quickly harden in private plumbing and the sanitary sewer system. The resulting clogs can cause sewer backups, especially in cold weather.
After a sanitary sewer backup, the cleanup can be costly to homeowners, property owners, and the City. So, over the holidays remember to permanently dispose of F.O.G. in the trash. Collect pan drippings in a can and allow them to cool and solidify, then place in the daily trash. Doing this will help decrease the possibility of a sewer clog or backup.
Help do your part to prevent F.O.G. clogs!
