Keeping your sidewalk free of snow and ice is important for the safety and well-being of pedestrians. In accordance with state statues, City Ordinance 34-59 requires property owners to:

  • Keep sidewalks abutting their property free from snow and ice
  • This includes the crosswalk approach and the curb line within the crosswalk approach to the full width of the placement.
The ordinance requires that property owners clear their sidewalks within 12 hours of the end of a winter weather event. If a property owner does not clear their sidewalk, state statute authorizes the City to clear the sidewalk and bill the property owner for all related expenses.

Shoveling snow is a preventative measure for accidents, as it helps clear walkways and driveways. However, it's important to note that shoveling snow itself can lead to accidents or injuries. The physical exertion involved in shoveling can result in dehydration, strains or sprains, and even heart attacks. To prevent and minimize snow shoveling injuries, consider the following recommendations:

  • Warm-up
  • Use the Right Equipment
  • Lift with Your Legs
  • Take Breaks
  • Stay Hydrated
  • Dress Appropriately
  • Pace Yourself
  • Push, Don't Lift
  • Know Your Limits
Consult with a Doctor: If you have existing health conditions or concerns, consult with a healthcare professional before engaging in strenuous physical activities like snow shoveling.

Following these recommendations can help prevent injuries and accidents while shoveling snow, ensuring a safer winter maintenance routine.
