The State of Wisconsin has received approval from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to create a network of electric vehicle charging stations across Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (WEVI) program is funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program and FHWA. The first step for using funds under NEVI is for states to complete construction on a network of Alternative Fuel Corridors that will provide a network of chargers across the country and along major interstates and federal highway systems.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has issued a Request for Proposals (RFPs) to begin the grant selection process for charging stations in Wisconsin.
The grants are intended for the private sector and are very inclusive in what they will fund. Eligible expenses include completing the work necessary to prepare a site to receive chargers, minor upgrades to utilities, purchasing and installing chargers, and five years of operating and maintenance costs.
Within Rock County there are three priority locations for locating NEVI compliant chargers and one of these locations are very likely to receive funding based on the WEVI plan. Those locations include: the 39/90 exit at Milton and Humes, the 39/90 exit at Racine Street, and the 39/90 exit at Edgerton and the Rock River.
On Friday, January 12, the WEVI Program Request for Proposals (RFP) application packet was made public. Private businesses and nonprofits are welcome to apply. Proposals will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time on Monday, April 1, 2024. Applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.
