Washington, D.C. (January 29, 2024) - Congressman Bryan Steil has called on Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge to provide transparency regarding the department's use of taxpayer funds, particularly in relation to public housing for undocumented immigrants.

The request comes after a recent House Financial Services Committee hearing where Rep. Steil inquired about HUD's response to the influx of migrants and whether the department keeps track of the amount of taxpayer money being spent on housing for illegal immigrants. Secretary Fudge confirmed that the department does not currently monitor how much taxpayer money is allocated for housing illegal migrants.

In a letter to Secretary Fudge, Rep. Steil emphasized the importance of prioritizing U.S. citizens in HUD assistance programs and ensuring that funds are not diverted to migrants due to the failure to secure the border. The letter states, "As American families struggle to afford decent housing, it is essential that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assistance prioritizes U.S. citizens and is not diverted to migrants because of our failure to secure the border."

Rep. Steil's call for transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayer funds aligns with his commitment to addressing the concerns of American families who are facing difficulties in accessing affordable housing. By urging Secretary Fudge to clarify the extent to which public housing authorities (PHAs) benefit undocumented immigrants, Rep. Steil aims to shed light on any potential misuse of funds and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately.

The congressman's efforts to hold the Department of Housing and Urban Development accountable for its role in the migrant crisis reflect his commitment to upholding the interests of U.S. citizens and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used effectively and responsibly.
