The Hedberg Public Library Board of Trustees has approved a motion to eliminate fines on all materials, effective September 1, 2024. The decision was made during a meeting held on Tuesday, July 16.
"We are hopeful that going fine free will encourage greater use of the library by those of limited income," said board president Katy Grogan. "This decision reflects our commitment to removing barriers to the use of the library."
This move aligns with a broader trend among libraries nationwide aiming to increase access and better serve vulnerable community members.
"A library is more than a place for books," stated library director Eric Robinson. "It's a community hub that should be accessible to all, and we're eager to be more available to those who may need us the most."
Robinson emphasized that eliminating fines could invite everyone to explore, learn, and grow without the fear of overdue fees.
"Our mission is to make knowledge and resources available to everyone," Robinson added. "We want to foster a love for reading and lifelong learning."
While late fines will be abolished, costs for lost or unreturned items will remain in place. Library staff are currently finalizing policies and procedures in support of this change. Users might notice some adjustments in their accounts as these logistical details are addressed.
"We are excited to take an important step forward in our efforts to welcome and serve all members of the community," Grogan concluded.
