The American Dream is alive and well in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, according to Beloit City Manager Jerry Gabrielatos.

In a recent Northwest Quarterly op-ed, Gabrielatos reflected on the region’s strengths while emphasizing the need for progress. “We can’t rest on our laurels,” he wrote. “Sustaining the American Dream requires continuous innovation and adaptation. It depends on three key components: housing, workforce development, and safe neighborhoods.”

Gabrielatos pointed to northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin as prime examples of communities that offer affordability, economic opportunity, and high quality of life. In the Rockford area, the median home price is $213,000, making homeownership attainable for many. The average income stands at $50,744, according to The Wall Street Journal, providing residents with a solid foundation for financial stability.

The region is also home to major employers like Collins Aerospace, GE Aviation, and Woodward Inc., all of which contribute to a skilled workforce and a thriving economy. Additionally, Chicago Rockford International Airport plays a significant role in commerce, handling approximately 3 billion pounds of cargo in 2023, largely due to operations by UPS and Amazon.

Beyond economic strength, the area offers a wealth of outdoor recreation. Gabrielatos praised Beloit’s green spaces and their alignment with Rockford and Freeport’s commitment to public parks. The Rockford Park District features 177 parks and facilities across 5,000 acres, offering residents and visitors ample opportunities to connect with nature.

“We have everything needed to support the American Dream,” Gabrielatos said. “But we must remain proactive to ensure its future.”

Jerry Gabrielatos has served as the City Manager of Beloit since January 2023, according to the City of Beloit website. Before this role, he worked in roles in municipal management in West Linn, Oregon, and Albert Lea, Minnesota.
