Congressman Bryan Steil participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a water conversion project in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. The initiative aims to address PFAS-related issues affecting the water system of 188 homes. Congressman Steil played a key role in overcoming bureaucratic hurdles that had delayed the village's access to loan funding.
"One of the most important roles I have as a member of Congress is helping cut through the red tape and deliver real results for Wisconsin families," stated Steil. "Safe, clean drinking water is critical for Wisconsin families, and I am thrilled to have been able to help the Village of Hales Corners make that a reality. This funding will not only help ensure families have access to critical infrastructure but will also reduce potential costs for Hales Corners residents by as much as $16,000 per household."
Earlier this year, officials from Hales Corners sought assistance from Rep. Steil’s office regarding PFAS chemicals found in their water system, which served 188 homes and exceeded EPA levels. The village faced challenges securing Safe Drinking Water Loan funding due to statutory interpretation issues under EPA rules.
Upon contacting Rep. Steil’s office, state and local government agencies collaborated to resolve these delays quickly. As a result, the village became eligible for funding that ensures affordable access to clean drinking water for affected families.
The efforts by Congressman Steil's office are expected to reduce potential costs for residents by up to 50%, translating into savings of approximately $16,000 per household.
A letter from the village providing additional background on this issue is available here.
