Bryan Steil, U.S. Congressman representing Wisconsin’s 1st district since 2019, raised concerns about election security and leadership in the City of Madison based on findings from a Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) report.
On July 18, 2025, Steil highlighted issues regarding uncounted ballots: "Knowledge of Uncounted Ballots - According to WEC’s report: On November 12, the former City Clerk “had reason to know or suspect” that a bag discovered by election officials “contained live, uncounted ballots.” but action was not taken by the clerk until December".
In another post from the same day, Steil pointed out security lapses at an election facility: "Lack of Robust Security Protections - According to WEC’s report: The building used as a staging area for the City of Madison’s elections was found unlocked “on more than one occasion” and even had an “unauthorized person sleeping in the facility.”".
Steil also addressed what he described as inadequate leadership in the city clerk's office: "Lack of Leadership - According to WEC’s report: 'There was a complete lack of leadership in the City Clerk’s office. It was the job of the City Clerk to immediately take action once notified about the found ballots, and she did nothing. It was the responsibility of the Deputy'".
Bryan Steil succeeded Paul Ryan in Congress and has represented Wisconsin's 1st District since 2019. Born in Janesville, Wisconsin in 1981, Steil is currently 42 years old and resides in his hometown. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
