Bryan Steil, U.S. Congressman representing Wisconsin’s 1st district since 2019, recently posted a series of tweets highlighting the findings of a Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) report regarding ballot counting issues in Madison during the November 2024 election.
On July 18, 2025, Steil announced, "WISCONSIN ELECTION NEWS Yesterday, the Wisconsin Elections Commission voted on a substantial report to outline the former Madison City Clerk's failure to count nearly 200 ballots in the 2024 November election - HIGHLIGHTS BELOW".
In a follow-up tweet posted the same day, Steil stated, "The report alleges that the former City Clerk 'took actions that were contrary to law,' specifically: - Wis. Stat. 7.15(1) – Clerk Supervision of Registration and Elections - Wis. Stat. § 6.79(2)(a) – Early Printing of Poll Books - Wis. Stat. §§ 6.88(1), (2) – Handling of".
Steil also cited language from the WEC report in another tweet on July 18: "Lack of Urgency - According to WEC’s report: 'The lack of action by the City Clerk with regard to the found ballots [was] astonishing. She demonstrated no urgency, let alone interest, in including those votes in the election tally ... That would have required the City Clerk to".
The Wisconsin Elections Commission is responsible for overseeing state and local elections and ensuring compliance with relevant statutes and procedures. The highlighted concerns focus on statutory requirements for clerk supervision and ballot handling under Wisconsin law.
Steil has served as Wisconsin’s 1st District representative since replacing Paul Ryan in 2019 and is known for his involvement in election oversight issues. He was born in Janesville, Wisconsin in 1981 and continues to reside there. Steil holds degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
