Bryan Steil, a U.S. Congressman, addressed concerns over government spending and public transportation funding in a series of posts on his official X account in early September 2025.
On September 4, Steil emphasized the need for fiscal restraint, stating, "We must continue our work to bring spending under control."
The following day, he turned his attention to fare evasion on public transit systems. In a post dated September 5, Steil wrote, "Fare evasion not only pushes MCTS toward insolvency, but it is fundamentally unfair to the hardworking families who rely on public transportation, follow the rules, and pay their fares. I’m committed to ensuring taxpayer dollars are being used effectively." In another message posted the same day, he added, "Federal funds are intended to strengthen and sustain public transportation, not to compensate for avoidable revenue shortfalls caused by lax fare enforcement."
Steil has represented Wisconsin's 1st congressional district since 2019. He has won multiple general elections against Democratic challengers: defeating Randy Bryce in 2018 with 54.6% of the vote; Roger Polack in 2020 with 59.3%; Ann Roe in 2022 with 54.1%; and Peter Barca in 2024 with 54%. These electoral victories have established him as a consistent presence in Wisconsin politics.
