Mark Holzman, Superintendent of the School District of Janesville (SDJ), issued a statement following the results of two referendum questions presented to voters. Preliminary election results indicate that over 60% of voters supported both measures on the November 5 ballot.
Holzman expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that one approved measure is a $14.5 million non-recurring operational referendum. This replaces a similar measure passed in 2020 and aims to maintain small class sizes, attract and retain staff, invest in curriculum resources, continue investments in classroom technology and infrastructure, and address costs related to insurance, supplies, transportation, and utilities. The goal is to avoid reductions that could hinder the district's mission.
The second question approved by voters was a $151.8 million capital referendum aimed at addressing facility needs across schools as part of Phase 1 of SDJ's long-range facilities plan. The funding will allocate $124.5 million for repairing or replacing high-priority maintenance needs, $16.2 million for improving special education classrooms, and $11.1 million for enhancing safety and security.
"We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community," Holzman stated. He emphasized appreciation for community engagement during the process and expressed hope that such involvement continues as these projects move forward.
Holzman concluded by highlighting the positive impact these approvals will have on students both now and in future years.
